Rotary Club’s £1,200 gift brings calm to care home
Residents of the
Elizabeth Fitzroy Home, in Rayleigh, can
stimulate their senses in a new room, thanks to the
fundraising efforts of the Rotary Club of Rayleigh Mill.
Rotary members presented the home with £1,222 which has been
spent on specialist equipment for the sensory room.
The equipment includes projector wheels which create a
calming atmosphere by projecting constantly changing images
on to a wall.
There is also a bubble tube with “swimming” fish Inside
which is surrounded by padded seats so the residents can
watch the fish and enjoy touching the vibrating bubbles. A
special switch means the viewer can change the colour of the
light and the bubbles’ flow.
The room also includes an aroma and sound diffuser system
which can create seven noises and four aromas to change the
mood of the room.
Melanie Simpson, one of the homes deputy managers, gave the
Rotary Club a list of the equipment she hoped to buy,
expecting one or two. She was thrilled when they said
members could buy the lot.
She said:
“This will make such a difference to those who use the room;
it helps calm everyone, both the residents and staff.
The presentation was made by club president Andrew
Shackleton. He said: “I am proud the club has been able to
support such a deserving cause. I hope now we have
established links with Elizabeth Fitzroy Home, we may
continue to support them in the future.”

Last year’s sell-out concert buys vital medical equipment
After last
summers successful sellout concert, Rayleigh Mill Rotary
Club are pleased to announce that we have purchased a vital
piece of equipment for the Critical Care Department at
Southend Hospital.
With the support of individuals and businesses from all over
the area the 2005 concert was the most successful to date.
This was only made possible by the many who volunteered
their time, energies or financial support. Alongside those
individuals and smaller companies a massive contribution
from each of the three main supporters of the concert
enabled the Rotary group to achieve their goal of purchasing
this vital equipment: The Ryan Properly Group who were our
main sponsor for the third time for the 2005 concert, 585
Specialized Building Services and Pannell Property
Investments.
Rayleigh Mill Rotary have purchased a Datascope CS100 Intra
Aortic Balloon Pump at £40,000. This is inserted into the
heart and takes over 75% of the pumping mechanism to enable
the heart to recover after trauma. This was done through
ASET the Advanced Surgical Equipment Trust. The trust was
set up 14 years ago as a non profit making organization to
assist with the purchase of surgical equipment for Southend
Hospital. It is run purely by volunteers and their main aim
is to help patients to have safer surgery and quicker
recovery times.
Since starting out it has assisted with the purchase of over
83 pieces of equipment and has raised over one million
pounds. What is important is that Aset retains the ownership
of these pieces of equipment to ensure that they ore used
continually for the benefit of local patients in our local
hospital.
We as a club feel it important to ensure that a large part
of the concert funds are returned back to the local
community that had originally supported us in our Concert in
the Park. By working with a charity such as Aset we can
achieve this in a professional way.
